In 1998, the City of Palm Desert renovated the old County Library and turned it into a community center with the intent to provide office space for permanent tenants and community rooms for use by not-for-profit and community groups. In 2013, the City approved the use of facilities and leasing of office space by small businesses. Currently, the Desert Recreation District is responsible for day-to-day operation and scheduling needs of the facility.
There are eight offices, two community rooms, and two kitchen facilities available for use by groups. City Council decided that not-for-profit and community groups could utilize the common room areas of the facilities at no cost and that the use of the office space would be leased at a minimal fee of a $1.00 to $2.10 per square foot per month, based on an annual lease. All tenants and users of the Center have to qualify under one of the following: 1) Portola Community Center tenants; 2) Public entity/501c(3) – serving youth; 3) Public entity/501c(3) – serving all ages; 4) Public entity/501c(3) – groups with Palm Desert residents participating; 5) Community groups based in Palm Desert serving youth; 6) Community groups based in Palm Desert serving all ages; 7) Community groups having Palm Desert residents participating; or, 8) small businesses that will not negatively impact facility use and parking.
HOURS OF OPERATION
Regular operating hours for the Center are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
USE OF FACILITIES
The office spaces are leased on a one-year agreement basis with automatic renewal.
Applications for use of the common community rooms are scheduled according to a six (6) month calendar, which is reviewed and approved by the City. Groups/businesses meeting the above criteria may submit an application at any time and groups currently using the facility are required to resubmit an application every six months.
